Clapping Music for the TR 909

Here is a real TR 909 drum machine sequenced with Ableton live playing Reich’s Clapping Music. Mid tom, hi hat, hi tom, rim shot, snare, and clap alternate the pattern as the kick drum and later ride cymbal play out the 3 on the floor pulse [pulse not in original score]. Also, I added emphasis using EQ and panning which was intentionally excluded [emphasis] form the original to focus on the phasing.

Now I’m ready to move on to phasing between beats ala Piano Phase!

Clapping Music for Conga, Shakers, Clap Sample, and Kick Drum.

Another version of Steve Reich’s Clapping music, shorter in duration than original score, with Conga, Shaker, Clap Sample, and a “3 on the floor” kick drum. Sounds ready for strings right? Like the post below this must be listened to in stereo for maximum phase effect.

808 Clapping Music

My first formal experiment in producing “Phase House”, or House that formally employs Steve Reich’s phasing technique. In this instance, I produced his “Clapping Music” piece but substituting 808 drum samples [and synth pads] in place of two pairs of clapping hands. Composition by Steve Reich, this arrangement by Avalon Kalin; all rights reserved.
